Wouldn't it be odd if a creator helped an ostrich balance itself by giving it appendages that just happen to look exactly like reduced wings, and which are constructed in exactly the same way as wings used for flying?

why evolution isture Jerry Coyne

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10689704
Like it's Avian relatives, the ostrich has a respiratory system build for the bird class. Ostriches use lungs, as well as an air sac system that originates in the thorax and extends into hollow bones (necessary for birds of flight)
http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2012...adaptation.htm

Since the ostrich is not a bird of flight, only some of the bones are hollow. For instance, it's lower legs are not hollow, but contain a thick cortex.
http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2012...adaptation.htm

It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs, and can run at up to about 70 km/h (43 mph)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostrich#cite_note-Davies-3

the more developed form of vivipary is called placental viviparity. Placental mammals are the best example, but other animals have also adapted by incorporating this principle. Examples include some species of scorpions[2] and cockroaches,[3] certain genera of sharks and snakes, and velvet worms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivipary

Recently a similar pattern of airflow has been observed in American alligators, a sister taxon to birds.

https://peerj.com/articles/60/

Alternatively, it is possible that endothermy, rather than flight per se, underpins the evolution of these features.

Benson et al. (2011) (http://dx.doi.org/10.1111%2Fj.1469-185X.2011.00190.x) concluded that pneumatization in non-volant maniraptoran nonavian theropods evolved in association with an elevated metabolic rate and “high-performance” endothermy. Wedel (2007) (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=intitle:%22What%20pneumaticity%20tells%2 0us%20about%20%E2%80%98prosauropods%E2%80%99,%20an d%20vice%20versa%22%20inauthor:%22Wedel%22) and Wedel (2009) (http://dx.doi.org/10.1002%2Fjez.513) concluded that air sac-driven pulmonary ventilation was ancestral for Saurischia based on the presence of vertebral pneumaticity in various sauropods and theropods.

Domestic chickens are not capable of long distance flight, although lighter birds are generally capable of flying for short distances, such as over fences or into trees (where they would naturally roost). Chickens may occasionally fly briefly to explore their surroundings, but generally do so only to flee perceived danger.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken

The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semiaquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth.

Scientists also identified a set of genes associated with platypus venom production.

Male platypuses produce a pain-inducing, snake-like venom, composed of at least 19 different substances, which is delivered to enemies or rival males through spurs on the males' hind legs.

Previous studies of venomous snakes had found that poison production is the result of evolutionary modifications to genes that once served other functions .

Some of the same genes appear to have modified in the platypus, but in a process entirely separate from the evolution of venom in snakes, according to the new study

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/05/080507-platypus_2.html

Genome analysis shows that the monotremes and snakes have similar venoms

Poisonous platypuses confirm convergent evolution
The finding, from an analysis of the genes encoding the dangerous mixture, also reveals the striking similarities between the poisons of different animals. The genes resemble those of other venomous animals, such as snakes, lizards, starfish and sea anemones.
Like eyes, fins and wings, which have evolved independently in a number of different lineages, platypus venom looks to be an example of convergent evolution, says Wesley Warren, a genomicist at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, who led the study, published in the journal Genome Biology

This scan turned up 83 genes in 13 different families of toxins, linked to effects including inflammation, nerve damage, muscle contraction and blood coagulation. For instance, platypuses make 26 different kinds of serine protease enzymes, which are also found in the venom of most snakes, and seven of their venom genes resemble a neurotoxin produced by spiders called α-latrotoxin

http://www.nature.com/news/2010/101012/full/news.2010.534.html

Behavioral evidence for the normal sensing of electric fields came from the work of Lismann (Lismann, 1958; Lismann and Machin, 1958; Machin and Lismann, 1960), thus establishing a new field of research. Electrosensitive neurons have been found in a wide variety of species including:

elasmobranchs such as rays and skates (Murray, 1960; Kalmijn, 1966)

teleost fish (Lismann, 1958; Lismann and Machin, 1958; Machin and Lismann, 1960)
mammals such as the duck-billed platypus (Scheich et al., 1986

Convergent evolution describes the acquisition of the same biological trait in unrelated lineages.

The wing is a classic example of convergent evolution in action. Flying insects, birds, and bats have all evolved the capacity of flight independently. They have "converged" on this useful trait.

1401
http://www.darwinismrefuted.com/myht_of_homology_01.html

1402
http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/moa

A number of species – some very large and some small – once roamed the country, but probably became extinct about 500 years ago

Moa were hunted to extinction by Māori, who found them easy targets. Their flesh was eaten, their feathers and skins were made into clothing. The bones were used for fish hooks and pendants

Flightless moa were the only birds in the world to lack any vestige of a wing

Nearest relatives

Ever since moa were revealed to European scientists in 1840, the question of the bird’s closest relative has been debated. Many people assumed that it was the kiwi because the birds lived in the same area. Some researchers still believe this. However, kiwi have wings and moa did not. Others argue that moa are more closely related to emus and cassowaries.

Certainly, moa are distantly related to the other ratites and have had an independent lineage for millennia. The moa ancestor was probably on the land that became New Zealand when it separated from the supercontinent Gondwana, some 85 million years ago. Moa evolved to become unlike any other bird, so comparisons are difficult. They differ genetically from other ratites

http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/moa/page-1

Research published in 2010 has found that the moa's closest cousins are small terrestrial South American birds called the tinamous (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinamou) which are able to fly.[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moa#cite_note-Phillips-7) Previously, the kiwi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi), the Australian emu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu), and cassowary (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassowary)[8] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moa#cite_note-Turvey-8) were thought to be the closest ancestors
wikipedia

Independent origins of New Zealand moas and kiwis

.Contrary to

expectation, the phylogenetic analysis shows that the kiwis are

more closely related to Australian and African ratites than to

the moas. Thus, New Zealand probably was colonized twice by

ancestors of ratite birds

http://www.pnas.org/content/89/18/8741.full.pdf

The most surprising result of the phylogenetic analysis is that
the two groups of New Zealand ratites have different origins,
the moas representing an earlier divergence among ratites,
whereas the kiwis more recently shared an ancestor with the
ostrich and Australian ratites.

It has been claimed that the ancestor of modern ratites was
flightless (27) and that the major ratite groups evolved due to
the break-up of Gondwanaland. However, the fact that moas
and kiwis do not constitute a monophyletic group is incompatible
with the view that all branching events between major
groups of ratites were caused by continental break-ups.
Under the assumption of a flightless ratite ancestor, the
moas, which represent an early divergence among the ratites,
and the kiwis, which represent a later divergence, must have
been isolated together when New Zealand was separated
from Australia at approximately 80 million years ago (28, 29).
A more unlikely alternative would be that a kiwi ancestor
arrived later by swimming:wallbash:. On the other hand, if the ratite
ancestor was flying and flightlessness evolved several times
among ratites, the kiwis can be assumed to have arrived later
than the moas on New Zealand. Such an ancestral flying kiwi
may have been related to the approximately 50- to 60-millionyear-
old flying birds with archaic palates that have been
found in North America and Europe (1, 2). The idea that birds
can lose flight capacity and change their morphology in
adaption to a ground-dwelling existence over a short time
span has support from island faunas on New Zealand (21) and
elsewhere (30, 31). Further work on the rate of evolution of
the 12S rRNA gene in birds is necessary to clarify this point.

THE HEART OF AN ALLIGATOR

While most reptiles have 3-chambered he

arts, the heart of alligators, and all crocodilians, has 4 chambers, a trait shared with mammals and birds. The advantage of a 4-chambered heart is that oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood are separated, which results in more efficient respiration needed for the high metabolism of endothermic (warm-blooded) animals, and enables different pulmonary (lung) and systemic blood pressures, but is seemly over-complex fo

r ectothermic (cold-blooded) crocodilians

http://www.myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/managed/alligator/facts/

Sang Chaud...

Amphibians have a three-chambered heart, while mammalian, crocodilian, and avian hearts have four chambers, two each for pulmonary and systemic circulations. The acquisition of a fully septated ventricle has evolved independently in birds, mammals, and crocodilians10 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2753965/#R10), and is an important example of convergent evolution

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2753965/#R10

Professor Roger Seymour from the Discipline of Environmental Biology (http://www.ees.adelaide.edu.au/research/enviro) says the modern crocodile heart is evidence that they were originally warm-blooded creatures that evolved into cold-blooded ones - an assertion which turns conventional evolutionary theory on its head.
"There's an assumption that warm-bloodedness always evolves from cold-bloodedness, because being warm-blooded is seen as better - this is a reversal of that thinking," he said

http://www.adelaide.edu.au/adelaidean/issues/5501/news5550.html

More commonly known as pterodactyls, pterosaurs were winged reptiles - the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight. The evidence for flight comes from their light hollow bones, large brains and an extremely long fourth digit providing wing support. The discovery of large numbers of fossil species indicates that pterosaurs were initially highly successful.

Species ranged from the size of sparrows to the largest known flying creature of all time with a 12 metre wingspan. Towards the end of their reign, only the larger species remained as the smaller species were out-competed by early birds. Birds evolved flight separately to pterosaurs in a classic example of convergent evolution
http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/life/Pterosaur

In this report we present various lines of skeletal evidence that indicate that pterosaurs had a highly effective flow-through respiratory system, capable of sustaining powered flight, predating the appearance of an analogous breathing system in birds by approximately seventy million years.

Convergent evolution of gigantism in several Cretaceous pterosaur lineages was made possible through body density reduction by expansion of the pulmonary air sac system throughout the trunk and the distal limb girdle skeleton, highlighting the importance of respiratory adaptations in pterosaur evolution, and the dramatic effect of the release of physical constraints on morphological diversification and evolutionary radiation.

This is an example of what biologists call convergent evolution: nature has a way of finding the same solutions (wings, hollow bones, etc.) to the same problem (how to fly

http://dinosaurs.about.com/od/typesofdinosaurs/a/pterosaurs.htm.

A keel or carina in bird anatomy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_anatomy) is an extension of the sternum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sternum) (breastbone) which runs axially along the midline of the sternum and extends outward, perpendicular to the plane of the ribs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rib). The keel provides an anchor to which a bird's wing muscles attach, thereby providing adequate leverage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever) for flight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight)

.Were they good fliers?
Yes. They had light hollow bones like birds and a keel on their breastbone for strong flight muscles

http://www.abc.net.au/science/ozfossil/ageofreptiles/fauna/pterosaurs.htm
Notarium is a term used for the fused vertebra of the shoulder in birds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird) and some pterosaurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterosaur). The structure helps brace the chest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorax) against the forces generated by the wings

Time to continue the general lesson in odd bits of pterosaurian anatomy and here we have a real specialisation: the notarium

The notarium provided a stable base for the attachment of flight muscles and to anchor the scapula for both flying and launching into the air

.
At least some pterosaurs were covered with hair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair)-like filaments known as pycnofibres, similar to, but not homologous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homology_%28biology%29) (sharing a common structure) with, mammalian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal) hair

Like many pterosaurs we now know of Sordes was covered in an extensive coat of pycnofibres which has been suggested as being indicative of a warm blooded physiology

Hollow neck bones allowed dinosaurs to evolve necks longer than any other creature that has ever lived, scientists say
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/science/Hollow-bones-led-dinosaurs-to-grow-worlds-longest-necks/articleshow/18693934.cms

The largest and heaviest living bird, the ostrich is flightless and instead is built for running. With its powerful legs, the ostrich can sprint in short bursts up to 43 mph (70 kph), and can maintain a steady speed of 31 mph (50 kph

Ostrich wings apparently help the giant flightless birds run, explaining the puzzling phenomenon of why ancient dinosaurs evolved feathered limbsbefore developing flight

The wings on ostriches, the largest living birds, were oncethought to be evolutionary leftovers that lingered around even after the birdsadapted to life on the ground, retained mostly for display andtemperature-control purposes.

They found the ostriches used wings as sophisticatedair-rudders for rapid braking, turning and zigzag maneuvers.

"You have to stop thinking about their wings as flightorgans and as stabilizers instead," Schaller said. "Think about whenyou run around a curb — you use your arms, too, a little like the ostrichesdo."

Some modern flightlessbirds might use their wings in similar ways. "South American rheasexecute rapid zigzagging as a means of escape, and use their wings to maintainbalance during these agile maneuvers," Schaller explained

http://fatwa.islamweb.net/fatwa/index.php?page=showfatwa&Option=FatwaId&Id=7232

{ ولحم طير مما يشتهون}

Economic Importance for Humans
Economic Importance for Humans: Positive

These birds are used mainly for eggs and meat production. The red junglefowl is sometimes used for cock fighting or chicken competitions. Gallus gallus feathers were used for pillows and mattress. (Limburg 1975, Peterson and Brisbin 1999)
Economic Importance for Humans: Negative

Gallus gallus is such an easy animal to take care of and can find food for himself that it does not have a negative impact on economy or humans. (Limburg 1975, Phillips 1999

1- The completed mating in chickens is the culmination of a sequence of behaviours. The rooster will initiate mating by exhibiting courtship behaviour: dropping one wing and dancing in a circle (the lowered wing will be on the inside of the circle dance). The hen will crouch (dip her head and body) to indicate receptiveness to the male
http://www.thepoultrysite.com/articles/1330/natural-mating-and-breeding

livinginthegarden.net (http://livinginthegarden.net/blog/clipping-chicken-wings-to-prevent-flying/) - 1024 × 768

Important Considerations:
Before you grab your scissors, you need to consider if the chickens you want to clip might ever have to deal with predators.

A predator can be a dog, cat, raccoon, fox, etc. If they do, you do NOT want to clip. Without a rooster to give them some protection, a hen’s only defense is to fly or flutter to get away from a predator. NEVER clip the wings of birds that are out in the open – a field, pasture or an unfenced yard where a neighborhood dog can walk right up to them. One predator can take down your whole flock and the birds will not be able to fly away.

However, if your chickens are truly confined to your backyard or an enclosed area, they should not have to ever fly in the first place. Clipping can be the perfect option for you. But remember, clipping is not a guarantee. Even with clipping, some birds will manage to get over fences
http://livinghomegrown.com/2013/02/day-25-how-to-clip-your-chickens-wings.html

Plutarch, in 1st century AD, praised chickens for their deep maternal love:

What of the hens whom we observe each day at home, with what care and assiduity they govern and guard their chicks? Some let down their wings for the chicks to come under
